The mental health field in India is relatively new and a great place for those studying psychology, therapy, counseling and special education to gain hands on work experience. Highlights of interning in psychology work in India include:

  • Work with qualified mental health professionals in India
  • Learn tools that another country uses in occupational therapy, counseling and special education.
  • Have face to face time with clients during therapy sessions
  • Share feedback and ideas with therapists, children and parents about progress, assessments and effectiveness of early intervention programs alternative forms of therapy.

Interns have the option to work in a clinical setting or a special education and rehabilitation center. Through the guidance of an multi-disciplinary team of therapists, psychologists, special educators and social workers, interns sharpen their skills and provide one on one attention to children with special needs.

Additional Details

  • Typical work day is Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 PM
  • Dress attire is modest, casual and comfortable
  • Children are aged between 3 to 16 years old
  • Interns must commit to a minimum of 6 weeks
  • Start dates are flexible (April and May are not good months to come)

PSYCHOLOGY INTERNSHIP LOCATIONS

The Psychology Internship is offered in two cities in India: Bangalore and Goa. Learn more about each location to understand where you would be better suited.

Bangalore is one of the most cosmopolitan cities of India and popularly known as the “IT Hub” of Asia. Interning in Bangalore is a great location for those who love city life and urban environments. Many international interns and travelers feel it is the perfect city to transition into India. With a culture heavy on South Indian traditions as well as influences from around the country, Bangalore is truly diverse in its languages, cuisines and activities. Some of the highlights of interning and volunteering in Bangalore include:

  • Constant events happening after work and on weekends such as networking, dance performances, concerts and educational workshops
  • Moderate temperatures year round: it never gets too hot or too cold
  • Meet people from around the world. Bangalore attracts travelers and expats who move there due to its strong business economy.
  • Goa is a beach haven for volunteers and interns who want to live a more relaxed pace of life. Filled with palm trees, sandy beaches, seaside shacks with Goan seafood and cold beer make Goa one of the most popular tourist destinations for international travelers and Indians. Even though Goa has a reputation of having a raging nightlife scene, it also is known for its beautiful Portugese inspired churches, old forts and wildlife sanctuaries. Some of the highlights of interning or volunteering in Goa are:

    • Shopping at Goa’s famous night flea markets
    • Exploring Portuguese architecture during weekends and free time
    • Go on nature and wildlife tours such as Goan jungle adventures

    LEAVE UR MARK HOUSING, FOOD AND STAFF

    Leave UR Mark provides clean, safe and communal housing for interns and volunteers who travel to India. All housing has WiFi, laundry service and access to public transportation. Please email us to request pictures and further details about the accommodation available for your particular internship or volunteer placement.

    Leave UR Mark provides breakfast and dinner daily to our interns and volunteers. Breakfast is normally a spread of cereals, breads, omelettes, fruit, jams and nutella. Dinner is an authentic Indian meal and is switched up consistently to help volunteers and interns taste a variety of Indian cuisine.

    In-country support staff in India are available for interns and volunteers who are traveling to India for the first or second time and need to get settled into their new surroundings. Our staff organizes your airport pickup, orientation, welcome lunch or dinner, helps you settle into work, provides suggestions on cultural activities and weekend excursions and is available to resolve issues that may come up during travel. Leave UR Mark staff works at all hours to help you transition smoothly into India.


    HOW DO I APPLY TO INTERN OR VOLUNTEER ABROAD?

    Leave UR Mark picks talented and dedicated students, recent graduates, travelers and career transitioners from around the world to come to India and work with our community. In order to see if we are a good match for you and vice versa, we ask you follow these steps:

    • Fill out an Application Form, Set Up a Consultation, or email us a copy of your resume/CV indicating what program you are interested in and when you’d like to start.
    • Our pre-departure coordinator will be in touch to set up a phone or Skype interview.
    • Fill out an application form after the phone or Skype interview and wait for an offer letter.
    • Once accepted, send back your acceptance letter and begin the steps for pre-departure (visa, inoculations, flights, etc.)
