Marketing in India’s Growing Economy: by Sven van Mourik

Johanna K. went to Bangalore to intern abroad in marketing and event management for some hands on work experience. Back at home in Germany, she studies English and American culture and business at the university of Kassel, but her side study in marketing led her to take full advantage of Bangalore’s IT sector: “I was looking around on the internet and found Leave UR Mark. I thought by myself: why not go to India? It’s obviously a real adventure, and I really wanted to see how people work and behave in a different culture.”

The walk to Johanna’s office is a nice one, although she explains the traffic in Bangalore remains a challenge, even on foot. As she walks past the gardens that lie next to her working place, she explains that she can occasionally work back at her apartment as well, although she prefers to make the trip to her office: “My co-workers are very nice, and they help me with everything. When I first came here, for example, I needed to exchange money at a good exchange rate but didn’t know where to go, so Poonam, my manager, helped me. Working in an IT office, she made a few phone calls to find the best exchange rate in the city. Turned out the place was five kilometers away, so Poonam phoned one of her colleagues, who came over with his motorbike and took me there!”

Entering her office – which her company is exchanging over the weekend for a bigger one – it is easy to see how the dynamic environment holds the future of the city.Starting up her laptop as one of her co-workers brings her a cup of tea, Johanna tells: “Most of the time I work here, I get new tasks over the day: right now, for example, I’m looking up all the mobile app development companies around Bangalore. Tracking down these companies allows my employer to contact them and to possibly work together with them: who around Bangalore would be interested in app development? Who needs a website designed?”

Bangalore’s booming IT and Event Management sectors
After her manager tells her she’ll be doing more face-to-face networking from the next week on, Johanna explains that besides her database work, she also works in event management for a famous Indian singer, who is gaining ground outside of India. “My task in this is to look for event management companies that can help this singer and organize his festivals.” At that, Johanna smiles, explaining that she’s really leaving her mark with this job: “I truly feel like I’m getting something accomplished. I’m part of the team and I’m really helping these companies get along: quite simply, I can help them get new customers. It’s a new experience, and it feels pretty good.”

Despite the many hours at her office, however, Johanna has also had the time to get to know Bangalore better. Enjoying lunch on the roof of her office, looking out over the green city, she explains: “I’ve gone to many places. I took the trip to Mysore which Leave UR Mark organized for us, but I’ve also gone exploring the city with another intern and a friend of mine, Lisa. She really made some connections in Bangalore and took me to see her friends, who invited us over to dinner. Later, they also managed to take us into this temple, where foreigners usually aren’t allowed. That was a great experience: walking around barefoot on such a place of worship makes you really experience the holiness of the temple. Next weekend, I’m going to this festival on Indian-German relations at Bangalore’s palace, which I’m really eager to see.”
Having gotten a taste of the IT sector of Bangalore, Johanna explains she’s likely to go back to India some day: “I’m going to finish my bachelor, but what lies after that I’m not sure yet.  Working for these upcoming companies in Bangalore has been great though, and I’d definitively want to travel to India again: if there’s one thing this country has made me realize, it’s that there is so much more of the world I want to see!”
